This course provides a thorough introduction to basic concepts in group, ring and field theory. The topics to be included in group theory are normal subgroups, quotient groups, and Sylow's theorems. Topics in ring theory will be ideals, integral domains, polynomial rings, and fields of quotients. In field theory, topics will include extension fields, straight-edge and compass constructions, elements of Galois theory, and a discussion of the solvability of equations by radicals.
